Petites perceptions instables, 2013

Taking time to observe, thinking that nothing may be happening, then one minute later realising that everything has changed. This is the strange feeling you get from Elvia Teotski’s neither stable nor final work. This is due to the unbelievable ill-used materials collected, whose resilience, capacities and possibilities are tested over and over again, as she enjoys exploring their character. Their preservation is uncertain, and always jeopar- dised. « I’m like in a laboratory and I do a few experiments » : multiple bursting of soap bubbles coloured with Indian ink (Sans titre, 2011/2012), edible leaf gelatin (Géométries solubles, 2012), stratified rubber shreds from an imaginary basement (Carottage, 2012), finely indented dust on the floor, sometimes (Broderies, 2009)... Installations emerging from new elementary forms which are repeated, deepened, drawn, adjusted, sculpted in the material, and little does she care that the latter is flaky, volatile, or evasive! Or even soluble, like this wafer paper that she cuts out obsessively and painstakingly to get patterns (displayed flat), that she assembles under humid conditions to make up small cubes, cylinders and pyramids with imperfect shapes (lined up on a glass plate). So many Petites perceptions instables (Little unstable perceptions) which are both the memory and the mark, and whose oppositions stress the imbalance. Everything here is unstable, fragile and transient; everything can appear and disappear within a few seconds. An instability constitutive of her approach to the world because, in a past life, Elvia Teotski travelled across the Southern regions, from Yemen to Madagascar, when she studied agronomics.
